PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The Master Meter is fitted with a mechanical Rate of Flow Indicator, Unit Drum attachment & a Veeder Root Counter. The Unit Drum attachment helps to read off fractions of units & the final cut-off point can be accurately observed to 1/20th part of a unit. The Unit Drum assembly is positioned between the Veeder Root Counter & the Calibrating Mechanism. The assembly consists of a circular drum graduated in 10 equal parts. Each graduation is equal to one liter, when unit of measurement is 'liters', & 10 liters, when unit of measurement is 'decaliters'.. Located outside the graduated drum is a circular transparent adjusting ring engraved with a scale divided in 20 equal parts.
The procedure for checking is very simple. The Master Meter is connected in series with the test Meter. After priming the system, the Counters of the test Flow Meter & the Master Meter are zeroised. The adjusting ring of the Unit Drum is reset by rotating it, so that the zero mark on the ring coincides with any graduation on the Unit Drum. A fixed quantity of product, say 1000 liters, is passed at a given flow rate. Counter reading on Master Meter & the fractional reading from the Unit Drum are noted (by reading coinciding graduation on the adjusting ring). After correcting the Master Meter reading by means of the calibration figures provided, the difference between the readings of the two Flow Meters is found out, which shows the inaccuracy of the test Flow Meter. If 1000 liters has been passed, then dividing the difference of readings by 10 will give the percentage error.
All Master Meters are calibrated in the factory against Weights & Measures approved Proving Tanks & each Master Meter is supplied with copies of calibrating factors at various flow rates. Master Meters can also be supplied on a trolley for ease of transportation on site.
